The Best Water for Coffee: Why Filtered Tap Water Makes a Difference

Why Water Quality Matters for Coffee

Water makes up around 98% of every cup of coffee. Yet most of us focus on the beans, the grind, or the brewing method — and overlook the one ingredient that's always there. Tap water quality varies significantly depending on where you live, and those differences can show up in your cup in ways that are hard to ignore: a flat taste, a metallic note, or an aftertaste that lingers.

Filtered tap water is one of the simplest changes you can make to improve the consistency of your daily brew — not by any magic, but by reducing what shouldn't be there in the first place.

    What's Actually in Tap Water?

Municipal tap water is treated to be safe for drinking, but that treatment process introduces its own compounds. Chlorine and chloramines are the most common disinfectants used, and while they're effective at eliminating bacteria, they're also volatile — meaning they're detectable in taste and smell, particularly in hot water like brewed coffee.

Depending on your local infrastructure and supply, tap water may also carry sediment, rust particles from older pipes, or elevated levels of heavy metals. These don't necessarily make water unsafe, but they can affect how your coffee tastes.

Water hardness — the concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium — is another variable. Some hardness is considered beneficial for coffee extraction, but very hard water can leave scale deposits in your equipment over time.

    What the Duryn One Filters

The Duryn One is a plastic-free water filtration pitcher designed to reduce the most common tap water impurities found in European households. It is certified to reduce:

    • Chlorine and chloramines — the disinfectant compounds most associated with off-tastes in tap water
    • Heavy metals, including lead and copper — which can enter water through older household plumbing
    • Sediment and particulates — physical particles that can pass through municipal treatment

These are the impurities for which the Duryn One carries certified performance claims. If you want to know the exact scope of certification, the product page includes full details.

The pitcher does not demineralise water or alter mineral balance for any particular brewing profile. It is designed to reduce unwanted compounds while retaining naturally occurring minerals.

Filtered Water and Coffee: What to Expect

Removing chlorine from tap water is probably the most immediately noticeable change. Chlorine is a volatile compound that interacts with heat, and many coffee drinkers report a cleaner, less distracting taste when brewing with water that doesn't carry it.

Reducing sediment and heavy metals contributes to cleaner-tasting water at the base level. Whether or not you notice a dramatic difference depends on your local tap water — if your water already scores well on taste, the change may be subtle. If your tap water has a strong chlorine smell or metallic notes, filtered water typically makes a more evident difference.

For coffee specifically, starting with water that tastes clean and neutral is a reasonable baseline. The Duryn One helps you get there consistently, without adjusting your brewing routine.

Practical Tips for Brewing with Filtered Water

A few simple habits make the most of filtered tap water for coffee:

    • Filter ahead of time. Keep the pitcher full in the fridge so filtered water is always ready. Cold water heats more evenly than water that's been sitting at room temperature near a heat source.
    • Replace the filter on schedule. A spent filter no longer reduces impurities effectively. Check the recommended replacement interval for your Duryn One filter and stick to it.
    • Use freshly filtered water. Water that's been sitting for several days can pick up odours from the fridge or the pitcher itself. Freshly filtered water gives you the cleanest starting point.
    • Rinse your equipment regularly. Even with filtered water, coffee oils and mineral deposits build up over time. A regular clean ensures your equipment isn't adding unwanted flavours.

    A Simple Upgrade Worth Making

Improving your coffee doesn't have to mean buying a new grinder or switching beans. Starting with water that has fewer impurities is a low-effort change with a real impact — especially if your local tap water has noticeable taste characteristics.

The Duryn One pitcher filters chlorine, chloramines, heavy metals, and sediment from tap water, giving you a consistent, clean base for every cup. It's plastic-free, certified for what it claims, and built to fit a daily routine without any complexity.
