Microplastics in your water: what the research shows, and why your plastic pitcher might be part of the problem
The plastic problem we didn't notice
We tend to judge water by what we can see, smell and taste. But a clear glass cannot tell us everything about the particles it contains, or the materials it touched before reaching the table.
Microplastics research is making that gap harder to ignore. A 2025 study in Nature Medicine reported microplastics and nanoplastics in sampled human brain, liver and kidney tissue. The findings raised important questions about exposure, but did not establish that the particles caused disease.
A separate 2024 study in the New England Journal of Medicine found an association between plastic particles in carotid artery plaque and subsequent cardiovascular events. It was observational: association is not proof of cause and effect.
The useful response is neither panic nor a promise that one product can solve everything. It is to ask better questions about the water we drink and the evidence behind the products we use.
What microplastics actually are — and why size matters
Microplastics are small plastic particles, commonly described as smaller than five millimetres. Nanoplastics are smaller still; many researchers use that term for particles below one micrometre, although definitions vary.
This distinction matters when reading a test report. A method that counts larger particles does not necessarily detect the much smaller ones. Two studies can report very different particle counts because they are looking at different size ranges.
That also makes a broad claim such as “removes microplastics” incomplete on its own. The next question should be: which particle sizes, measured with which method?
A claim about cleaner water should be the beginning of a question, not the end of one.
What's actually in your water — tap and bottled
In a 2024 study of three bottled-water brands sold in the United States, researchers reported an average of approximately 240,000 detectable plastic particles per litre. Around 90% were nanoplastics. A technique called stimulated Raman scattering microscopy helped identify particles that earlier methods could miss.
Those results describe the samples and methods used in that study. They are not a measurement of every bottled-water brand, and a particle count alone does not establish the health risk of drinking a particular bottle.
Tap water has also been studied. A 2018 global survey reported anthropogenic particles in 81% of 159 tap-water samples, predominantly fibres. Its sampling and identification methods were different from the bottled-water study, so the figures should not be treated as a direct comparison.

The pitcher paradox
A filter pitcher is meant to improve water. Yet “filtered” tells you very little unless you know what the cartridge is designed and tested to do.
There are two separate questions worth asking. What does the filter remove? And which materials touch the water? A product can answer one clearly while leaving the other unexplained.
Look beyond the outer jug. Ask about the reservoir, cartridge housing, filter media, seals and spout. For each component, a specific material description is more useful than a broad promise about purity.
Equally, do not assume that a glass vessel proves a particular removal rate. Materials and filtration performance need their own evidence.
What “plastic-free” should mean in a water filter
A useful material claim should tell you exactly what it covers. When comparing pitchers, work through the complete water path rather than stopping at the product photograph:
- The vessel: what holds the filtered water?
- The reservoir and spout: which surfaces does the water pass over?
- The cartridge housing: what encloses the filter?
- The filter media and seals: what other materials are present?
The same standard should apply to us. A claim should have a clear scope, and a customer should not need to guess which components are included.

What carbon filtration does — and what it doesn't
Activated carbon is commonly used to improve taste and reduce certain chemicals. Depending on the complete system, filtration can involve substances attaching to a filter surface or particles being retained in its pores.
That does not make every carbon cartridge interchangeable. A claim for one substance or particle size does not establish performance for another. Nor should a result for one cartridge be applied automatically to every cartridge in a product range.
Read the specific claim, not just the technology name. Look for the tested contaminant, reduction result, capacity and applicable standard. Avoid interpreting a general certification badge as a promise to remove everything.
What you can actually do today
- Start with your water supply. Read the available local water-quality information and follow any current drinking-water advisories.
- Choose for a specific need. Match a filter's documented capabilities to the contaminant or taste issue you want to address.
- Check the complete specification. Review both the water-contact materials and the evidence for filtration performance.
- Follow the maintenance instructions. Clean the pitcher and replace its cartridge according to the manufacturer's guidance.
A thoughtful water routine starts with useful information: what comes from your tap, what your filter can do, and what remains uncertain. That is a stronger foundation than any single headline or promise.
